The central leaders of the Congress and NCP have decided to make drastic changes in the respective political organisations in order to weed out non-performers and refurbish their political image.

After taking a major drubbing in the BMC elections, the top leadership of both parties held meetings to figure out where things went wrong, and find corrective measures.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Manikrao Thakre have sent their assessments to All  India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Mohan Prakash. Individual leaders in the Congress have also dispatched their feedback to AICC general secretary Ahmed Patel.

A senior functionary in the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) said: “The central leadership is toying with probable candidates to replace the outgoing Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief Kripashankar Singh. They also plan to replace the state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre.”

While several permutations and combinations are being worked out, the AICC will make the changes only after the Uttar Pradesh assembly results.

Senior Congress leader Ananth Gadgil observed, “The biggest challenge before the party is to find a suitable Marathi face with whom to effectively counter Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray.”

“The Congress cannot overlook the Marathi factor when it comes to tackling people’s sentiments, which have given the rivals an upper hand in both the Mumbai and Pune civic polls.”

Keeping in mind the 2014 assembly elections, the Centre is likely to support the suitable Marathi candidate to take charge of the Mumbai Congress. As for the north Indian vote bank, they feel AICC secretary, MP Sanjay Nirupam and senior MLA Raj Hans can take care of the vacuum created by the exit of Kripashankar Singh.

The CM, who also proved a failure in the local bodies’ elections, may survive for some time.
