He was out of action while spending nine months in Tihar jail. He even faced suspension from his party. But now, city’s tainted MP, Suresh Kalmadi, is coming back in action by attending public functions.

Even sources from the Congress are saying that the high command is planning to cancel Kalmadi’s suspension after the parliament session to strengthen the party which faced debacle in the recent municipal corporation election.

After coming out of Tihar jail in January, Kalmadi returned to Pune amid municipal corporation campaign. However, he did not play any active role in the campaign. Now that the elections are over, Kalmadi has started making public appearances in the city.

Few days back, Kalmadi
attended the Airport Advisory Committee meeting and took up the issue of proposal of an international airport in Pune. On Sunday, Kalmadi flagged off the Pune-Ahmedabad Duronto Express from Pune railway station where he indicated that he is still very much active in politics and intends to contest the next Lok Sabha polls.

Sources from the Congress told DNA, “Party had a poor show in the recent municipal elections in Pune and the absence of Kalmadi was a major factor for it. But now Kalmadi is again becoming active in Pune which is an encouraging sign for the party workers.”

“Recently, a group of local leaders went to New Delhi and held a meeting with the national leaders of the party, where they indicated that his suspension will be cancelled after the parliament session and Kalmadi will take the charge of the party in Pune,” the sources added,

Conflict in Cong grows
Internal conflict within the city Congress refused to settle down. While Congress has nominated corporator Deepak Mankar for the post of deputy mayor in the PMC, who is close to Kalmadi, MLA Vinayak Nimhan has given his support to rebel corporator Mukari Shetty Algude for the post. Nimhan said, “Pune was once known as a Congress bastion. But over the years, it has lost ground and the local leadership is responsible for it. We are not against anyone, but we want party to improve its image. Therefore, we are going to meet chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and other leaders in Mumbai on Tuesday where will explain our stand for supporting Algude.”
