Chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday said the Congress was fighting only against the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Countering the NCP’s bid to take credit for development works in the city, he said funds for these works were brought in by the Congress.

Chavan was speaking at the launch of the campaign of Congress candidates. Though the NCP is aggressively taking credit for development, Congress seems to be playing it safe. The leaders followed restraint and read out a list of works for which the Congress had brought in funds as they were ruling at the Centre.

The chief minister said the people have already rejected parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena and these will be routed in the civic polls.

Appealing to people to vote for the ideology of the Congress, he said, “The Congress believes in developing urban areas. We are ruling at the Centre and therefore it is easier for us to bring in funds for development works, which we have done even in case of development projects in the city.”

Chavan said keeping in view the progress of Pune, he passed the city’s development plan that was pending for many years and brought in projects like the metro rail.

Without naming the NCP, the chief minister said some party tried to create confusion on the development plan and metro rail project, but the Congress is committed to getting it done in the interests of the city.

He said if the Congress obtained a full majority, it would be able to focus on development instead of struggling with alliance parties on important decisions.

Minister for cooperative and parliamentary affairs, Harshawardhan Patil attacked the NCP, saying it created hurdles in major decisions regarding the city’s progress. If only it would have cooperated, Pune would have been a different city in five years.

They also tried out the Pune Pattern which proved fruitless, he said, adding that only the Congress, which brought in funds to the city, could take the city to among the top ten cities in the country.
Forest minister, Patangrao Kadam urged voters not to back parties busy criticising others rather than focusing on development.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president, Manikrao Thakre said Congress has not compromised with its ideology for anything, he stated.
