Launching the campaign for Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in the district, Maharashtra Congress chief Manikrao Thakre on Tuesday expressed hope that the party, which is currently in power in only three ZPs in the state, would improve the tally this time.

Congress had done well in the recent municipal council polls, he said. "We had 960 councillors last time, which increased to 1,250 this time. The trend would be repeated in the ZP and Panchayat elections."

On the remark by NCP legislator Sandeep Bajoria on Monday that Congress was "the number one enemy of NCP", Thakre said that it was "childish". NCP and Congress were political competitors but not enemies, he said.

He also addressed public meetings at Zari, Yelabara (Yavatmal) and Aarambhi (Digras) with RPI leader Jogendra Kawade.
