Afraid of losing the existing vehicle count on the 4.7-km-long Bandra Worli Sea Link, the Reliance Infrastructure-led consortium is likely to offer a number of sops to motorists who save about 20 signals from their way to Worli from Bandra via the sea link.

Sources said that RInfra, in particular, is concerned about the reducing number of vehicles and it has assigned a team just to work on a financial model, which can offer a number of concessions to motorists who use the sea link daily.

These discounts will include concession to daily users, pass holders as well as special concessions for those who use the sea link during non-peak hours.

“Our team is working out various combinations. The model will be ready by second week of March,” said the official.

Sources in the company have also said that unlike other tolled roads, including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the sea link is an unexplored area and several changes or modifications may be necessary while implementing the toll structure.

“As per the government estimate, the sea link was expecting a vehicle count up to 1 lakh per month. In reality, there are about 52,000 vehicles plying on it. This may force us to make changes in the structure,” said a source.

A top official from the company, while denying that the vehicle count will drop if the toll is increased from Rs50 for a single trip to Rs65, said that people in the past year and a half have realised that using the sea link saves a lot of time.

“We are sure the sea link will continue to be popular among motorists. Those who are used to it will not mind paying extra,” said the official.
