Committee to suggest ways to up conviction in Maharashtra

In order to increase the conviction rate in criminal cases in Maharashtra, the state  had formed a four-member committee, which includes an IPS officer.

The committee will visit several states where conviction rate is high, conduct a study and give suggestions on how the same can be achieved. 

A general resolution (GR) was issued last week regarding the formation of the committee. The committee is headed by SD Sankhe, director of directorate of law and judiciary and joint secretary to state home department, IPS officer Nikhil Gupta, director of Maharashtra Police Academy in Nashik, JD Supekar, superintendent of police with the state crime investigation department and Ravindra Khandagle, assistant commissioner of police, Mumbai Crime Branch. 

“Pay personal visits to those states in the country where conviction rate is high and conduct a study as to what are the reasons for the high rate there and give suggestions as to what measures can be taken to increase the conviction rate in Maharashtra,” the GR stated. 

The government has given the committee a three-month deadline to submit its report to the government along with the suggestions.

“We will visit few city police and rural police departments soon and see what measures are adopted by them to increase the conviction rate,” said one of the members, requesting anonymity.
