From now on, police officers will really have to be ill to avail themselves of sick leave. Troubled with the increasing instances of policemen/women going on sick leave, the commissioner of police has issued stringent guidelines for the force.

One of the strictest points raised in the order is that if a policeman/woman goes on sick leave for more than a week through improper means, s/he won’t be entitled to that month’s salary. Also, if a policeman/woman calls in sick, another will be sent to his/her home to check if he/she is indeed unwell.

“A policeman will be appointed who will have to make a surprise visit at the residence of the sick colleague and check if he/she is actually resting. Also, if a policeman/woman is hospitalised, the concerned police station or department will have to appoint another to visit him/her in the hospital and see if he/she is receiving proper treatment. If he/she is facing any problem, the concerned police station should help him/her,” the order states.

A deputy commissioner of police, requesting anonymity, said, “We are short on manpower. Sometimes, a policeman/woman takes leave citing different excuses resulting in further shortage. These guidelines will ensure that nobody takes undue advantage of leaves.”

However, the order, a copy of which is with DNA, also states that even if a policeman/woman is unwell, it will be mandatory for him/her to come for a roll call at the concerned police station or branch or department. “If a constable lives in Thane or Navi Mumbai and has been advised bed rest, how will s/he be able to visit police station for a roll call?” asked a constable.

As per the order, those who don’t have a sick pass won’t be allowed to go on sick leave. The passes can now be collected only from the police station or department where the policeman/woman works. Earlier, they could be collected from any police station across the city.  Copies of the order, which was issued on January 21, have been sent to all police station, branches, units and departments of the city police.
