Mumbai citizens will soon be able to book trains, bus and air tickets and pay telephone bills using a single card. The card will also allow visits to other parts of the country.
After Delhi, Mumbai is now preparing to introduce a common mobility card. To be referred to as India One card, the card can be used at railway stations, metro stations, inside buses/bus stations, ST and BEST depots and all private transport counters. It will also permit online ticket booking.
The state urban development department, which will be the nodal agency for the issuance, usage and management of the smart-card system, has started laying ground for its introduction. A senior official from the urban development department said that the concept note on the new-age technology and its usages has already been forwarded to various civic agencies and utility providers. These agencies will now suggest measures that need to be taken to facilitate the introduction in their respective spheres.
As per the Centre’s plan, the card system will be issued under the public-private partnership model.
The official said the plan was to bring even the parking fees and toll tax under the single-window system. Various utility bills could also be paid using the smart card.
The card will be available free-of-cost. Consumers will, however, be charged a refundable deposit of Rs50.
All transport operators will provide the service.
