Students and parents are still confused about the sports achievement marks even though the education department has given all instructions.
Perin Bagli, principal, Activity High School at Breach Candy, who is also secretary of the ICSE schools’ association in Mumbai, said, “Several parents thought that after getting certificates from the district sports authority, they can add the marks online. Most of them do not know where they have to add the marks. We have informed parents, who are calling us, to check the process. When we called the education department, they told us that they will be sending an e-mail with the information, but we haven’t received any.”
A worried parent from the Bombay Scottish School in Mahim, said, “The anxiety of securing a seat in junior college is still not over for our child. We were asked to get a certificate from the sports authority, which we did. We don’t know what to do next. As there are no set rules for us, we are expecting the process to take time. Some of us have not even tried going online to register. Our school is also awaiting information from the department.”
Several students from international boards, who wanted the benefit of additional marks, are still clueless about how they will get it. A student from a school that follows Cambridge curriculum said, “During admissions, 25 marks mean a lot. Students miss out on seats in prominent colleges even with a difference of one per cent. So why should we be deprived of these additional marks?”
However, an official from the deputy director’s office, said, “The state has already released a resolution for the ICSE schools and also for students from other boards. The policy of giving 25 marks for sports excellence has been extended to all other boards for this year’s admissions. We have already sent the required e-mails to all schools. Anybody having a doubt can approach guidance centres in their areas for help.”
