A 42-year-old woman, working as a court clerk in the city, has lodged a complaint with the Deccan Gymkhana police station alleging that she was served mastani laced with bhang at a reputed cold drink shop.

The Deccan Gymkhana police filed a case of criminal intimidation, causing hurt by poison and act done with common intention against Appa Kaware, the owner of Kaware Cold Drink House on Karve Road, after the complaint was filed on Tuesday. Despite repeated attempts, Appa Kaware was not available for comment. The staff at his shop refused to talk.

Senior inspector Manohar Joshi told DNA, “The woman has been patronising the shop for the past four years daily as her husband has been advised by his doctor to eat ice cream. On March 17, after finishing her work, she went to the shop and asked for ice cream. Inclined to order one more ice cream, she was going through the menu when Appa told her that her flab would be reduced if she had badam mastani. Convinced, she asked for a take-away parcel of the mastani.’’

Joshi added, “As the victim’s order arrived, Appa took the parcel and opened it. He added a few drops of a liquid to the mastani telling the victim that it would help her lose weight. He also insisted that she should eat the ice cream in the shop but she refused and rushed home. She fell unconscious after eating the ice-cream at home.’’

According to Joshi, “When the victim passed out, her husband took her to a private hospital. After examining her, the doctors asked him about the incident in detail. The husband then rushed to the shop and brought Appa to the hospital. Appa admitted in the presence of the doctor, treating the victim, that he had mixed bhang in the victim’s mastani. He even offered to suggest a remedy. However, the doctor kept the victim under observation for 24 hours.’’

Joshi added, “Later, when the victim’s husband approached Appa demanding to know why he had mixed bhang in the mastani, a relative of Appa issued a threat to kill him.’’

According to Joshi, a police team went to arrest Appa after the complaint was lodged. However he could not be arrested as he had got himself admitted to a private hospital for high blood pressure.’’
