The Mumbai police Special Squad, on Sunday, arrested 26 people, including bar managers and owners, for allegedly organising a cockfight, which is illegal and has been banned by the government. On the dry day, several people were found enjoying the cock-fight with ample liquor being served. The police seized 28 cocks, of which around seven were found dead.

According to assistant police commissioner, Social Service Branch, Vasant Dhoble, specific information was received that an illegal cockfight is being organised behind SK Resort in Borivli (W) and a raid was conducted.

“Over 150 people were found watching this fight and when the raid was conducted some managed to escape. The arrested were mainly managers and owners of bars in the suburbs. Liquor was also being served, inspite of it being a dry day,” he said.
“Knives were tied on the claws of cocks and they were forced to fight. Bets accepted ranged from Rs50,000 to Rs2 lakh and the cost of each cock is anywhere between Rs5,000 to Rs20,000,” said Dhoble.

Those arrested have been booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, Prevention of Gambling Act and serving illegal liquor. They will be produced before the court today.

“We have learnt that these cocks were bought specifically for the fight. The isolated location was chosen for easy escape. We are investigating from where the cocks were bought and whether such fights had been organised by the arrested persons in the past,” said Dhoble.
