Immediately after being sworn into office, chief minister Ashok Chavan announced the time-bound implementation of the 21-point joint manifesto of the ruling parties.Giving the highest priority to the implementation and monitoring of the manifesto, he also announced a separate department for this task.
Chavan said that decisions towards the effective implementation of the assurances given in the manifesto will be taken in the next one month and the actual implementation should start within 100 days. The joint manifesto includes provisions for a health card for people below the poverty line, providing Rs1.25 lakh to every girl child on attaining the age of 18 as well as special endeavours for the development of small and medium scale industries.
According to Chavan, the health card facility will allow free treatment even for serious ailments like cancer, heart attacks and kidney disease. Supplying essential commodities at fair prices is also on the top of agenda of the new government, he said. The government will announce loans to farmers at the interest rate of three per cent.
Addressing a joint press conference with deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal at Mantralaya, Chavan also spoke of plans to transform Mumbai into a world-class city.
"The speedy completion of the ongoing development projects worth Rs50,000 crore in the city will be our topmost priority along with emphasis on the law and order situation," he said. Referring to last year's terror attacks, Chavan said that the state is prepared for any eventuality. "We have strengthened the police force with the formation of specialised forces like Force One, the establishment of the National Security Guard (NSG) hub in Mumbai and procurement of state-of-the-art equipment."
While avoiding specific names, the chief minister also said that no hooliganism by any political party or groups will be tolerated.
