Green enthusiasts and nature lovers, get ready with your cameras. This World Earth Day is bringing with it an opportunity to narrate “nature’s story” with the aid of five photographs.

Conceptualised and organised by the environmental NGO, Ecofolks, in collaboration with Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Maharashtra Nature Park Society (MNPS), Fotothon 2012 will give participants 24 hours to take pictures related to environment and wildlife.

The contest will be held on April 21-22 to coincide with World Earth Day.

“The idea of this unique 24-hour photography competition is to combine sports with environmental awareness. So once the event is flagged off, the participant has 24 hours to click and submit pictures at the venue itself,” said Paresh Pimpale, founder-chairman of the Mumbai-based Ecofolks, which has been working towards environmental conservation.

“With the help of not more than five pictures and small captions, participants have to weave out a story that should appeal to the panel of judges, who will rate it on their environmental-based narrative skills,” said Ekta Pange, co-ordinator for Fotothon 2012. She added that participants can submit their single best photo based on the subject of people and their relationship with nature.

In 2011, the first year of Fotothon, around 350 photographers participated in the competition.

“A single picture can move people to think, and even take steps to help sustain the planet. Fotothon is a unique competition celebrating the beautiful nature around us and also making a commitment to care for the environment and safeguard it for the future generation,” said Avinash Kubal, deputy director, MNPS.

The winners of Fotothon will be felicitated during World Environment Day on June 5. Those interested can log on to www.fotothon.in to register.
