It’s a safe and very successful game that political parties play, the rebels are kicked out of the party, they prove their mettle in the elections and then are warmly welcomed back. In order to keep up the equations for the alliances, this method has found favour with all the political parties including Sena-BJP-RPI and the Congress-NCP.

In the 2002 and 2007 civic elections, delimitation and seat sharing issue had become a stalemate for Sena-BJP. Party workers were upset as they were not considered for the tickets and rebels were suspended by the parties. As soon as the results were out however, the saffron alliance was eager to take back the winning rebels whole-heartedly — so that the government could be formed in the BMC. Rahul Shewale, the standing committee chairman was Sena’s rebel candidate in 2002, but after he won, he was a family member once again. In the 2007 elections, Vilas Chavri from Khar-Danda and Chhotu (Parshuram) Desai from Worli were the prominent rebels. Both of them won from their respective wards contesting as independent candidates.

“Such an arrangement leaves a bad taste with other party men as an example. It might also provoke the rebels to join other side if that alliance has a strong chances of forming ruling front”, said a senior politician.

But, political parties feel that the deal is a perfect arrangement, and win-win for both sides. “Each number is more important than smaller insults. Congress always had a big heart for their old folks. So there is no question why a successful candidate should be left out and make things easier for enemy party”, said a Congress leader.

Shiv Sena, this time, has seen the maximum rebels - sitting and ex-corporators, shakha pramukhs and the party workers have shown their disappointment to the party. Prominent names among these are corporator Raja Chougule, Renuka Dive, Harish Shukla, ex-corporator Sujata Shelar. While shakha pramukhs like Tatya Sarang, Sharad Gosavi, Bhagwan Nalawade, Arjun Naik, Vidya Korgaonkar, Naresh Shirdhankar have also rebelled from the party. The Sena has fired them from their posts and cancelled their membership too. Similarly, BJP has too suspended sitting corporators Janak Sanghvi, Jayshree Kharat, Arvind Bane, as well as party’s general secretary Parag Alavani from the party for their revolt.
