Reiterating its announcement, the Congress-NCP alliance has once again assured regularisation of slums erected between 1995 and 2000. While clarifying that the announcement was subject to the Supreme Court rulings, the alliance has tried to woo the slum dwellers by assuring housing projects on central land.
The Congress-Nationalist Congress Party-Republic Party of India joint manifesto, released on Wednesday, has stated that a demand would be put up with the Centre for lifting of the regulations for slums within 500 metres of the high-tide line and making it 100 metres. This would largely affect the slums in coastal areas between Colaba and Varsova. The manifesto also assures to launch a single-window facility for the documents for the slum dwellers in the list of slums constructed prior to 1995.
It further gives assurance of reservation of 5% of the BMC revenue for the development of the slums. The alliance stunned the environmentalists by announcing rehabilitation of nearly 40,000 tenements that are on forest land.
When asked about the announcement, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said that the 500 metre restrictions are arbitrary and the geographic layout of the city was unique and needs to be given special attention.
The manifesto has assured 40,000 toilets in Mumbai by adding 10,000 toilets every year. It has also assured 50% concessions on monthly and quarterly BEST passes. The students have been wooed with reduction of rates in ticket prices by Re1.
The alliance has also announced a term deposit of Rs5,000 for girls studying in BMC schools.
The interest on this deposit will take care of their education till Class 10. Moreover, children of construction workers will be admitted in BMC schools, while the redevelopment of BMC school buildings will be undertaken, it has stated.
