The city has been virtually sealed by the police from Tuesday evening to ensure that anti-social elements from outside will not sneak into the city and create trouble as the citizens vote on Thursday.
The police have set up 21 check-posts at various entry points of the city where every vehicle entering the city limits are being screened. When the polling begins, the police will pay extra attention to 85 polling booths at 13 polling stations which have been identified as sensitive.
Assistance commissioner of police (special branch) Arvind Patil told DNA, “Besides the entire manpower of the city police force, reinforcements have been brought in from the railway police, State Reserve Police Force and various police training schools. The policemen will be assisted by 763 Home Guards and 1,459 volunteers who have been given temporary designations of special police officers.’’
A senior officer told DNA, “We have identified 21 sensitive spots where trouble had erupted in previous elections and stepped up security in these areas. Besides, we are screening lodges, guest houses and hotels for suspicious people and anti-social elements. Crime branch sleuths are keeping an eye on the activities of people who had been arrested in the past for various crimes.’’
