Civic polls: Good turnout in South Maharashtra

Kolhapur (70%), Satara (72%) and Sangli (70%) recorded approximately good turnout.

Voting for zilla parishads (ZP) and panchayat samitis in South Maharashtra was peaceful on Tuesday, while its districts Kolhapur (70%), Satara (72%) and Sangli (70%) recorded approximately good turnout.

The main battle is between Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress in these districts.

In Kolhapur, 257 and 485 candidates are in the fray respectively for 68 ZP seats and 137 seats of 12 panchayat samitis. Congress candidate Manisha Waskar and independent Sunita Gavali have already been elected unopposed respectively for ZP and panchayat from Pachgaon village.

In Satara, there are 67 ZP seats and 134 seats of 11 panchayat samitis. The voting for 65 seats of ZP and 129 seats of panchayat were conducted on Tuesday for which 223 and 386 candidates are in the fray. The polls of one ZP and two panchayat seats in Nagthane are scheduled on February 12, due to judicial matter.

While NCP’s three panchayat seat candidates namely Somnath Pawar (Ambwade), Sunita Sarade (Apshinge) and Jayant Kumbhar (Atit) have been elected unopposed. Congress candidate Mohini Jangam has been elected unopposed for the ZP seat from Yalgaon village.

Similarly in Sangli, 204 candidates have fielded for 61 ZP seats and 390 candidates contesting 123 seats of 11 panchayat samitis. Congress candidate Prakash Desai was elected unopposed for ZP’s seat in Arag and Megha Zanbare was elected unopposed for a panchayat samiti seat from Dongarsoni village.

There were incidents of malfunctioning of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) at two places namely Chandoli Vasahat in Walva taluka in Sangli district and Hasur Khurd in Kagal taluka of Kolhapur district where the EVMs were replaced respectively after 211 votes and 333 votes.

The villagers have demanded re-polling at both the centres.

In Kolhapur, the villagers boycotted the voting at Chafwade village in Ajara taluka and Khidrapur village in Shirol taluka. At Chafwade, the villagers protested for proper rehabilitation for the project-affected villagers of Uchangi dam. While in Khidrapur, the villagers protested over ‘stringent’ provisions for development activities around ancient and Archaeological Survey of India protected Kopeshwar temple due to the Ancient Monuments, Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 2010.
