The Brihanmumbnai Municipal Corporation has decided to reconstruct the India’s oldest concrete road known as the ‘Queen Necklace’ spending Rs60 crore.

The corporation will disburse road construction amount to contractor in installments after the completion of the work.

“We are working on various modules to complete reconstruction on this 70 years old road,” said senior officials from the road department. RN Kulkarani, chief engineer of the BMC’s road and traffic department, confirmed the project.

Senior civic officials said, the BMC will issue the tender notice soon and only big companies will be allowed to participate in bidding. Another official said, the corporation will disburse road reconstruction amount in installment manner after the construction get over completely.

The BMC’s road department and traffic department are working on plans to divert the Marine Drive traffic. “We can not close both sides of the road. We are taking inputs from all stakeholders, so the traffic flow doesn’t get hampered. In the beginning, we will close one stretch and then another. The work will be carried out in phases,” he said, adding that the civic body will inform all residents of the area. “If they extend their cooperation, the BMC will able to complete work in stipulated time.”

The BMC appointed consultant had given two options. Reconstruct the concrete road at the cost of Rs60 crore, and the other, lay down a new asphalt road, costing Rs35 crore.

“We are considering concrete option because of its durability. The concrete road life span is more than 50 years against the 10 of asphalt and need maintenance in every few years after. Concrete road is one time investment while asphalt maintenance cost is high,” he said.
