A day after lakhs of Dalits gathered at Shivaji Park on Ambedkar’s death anniversary, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has swung into action to clean the mess.

The BMC on Friday claimed to have collected and disposed 180 metric tonnes of garbage from Chaityabhoomi and Shivaji Park in Dadar between December 4 and December 7.
On Friday morning, BMC workers were seen rolling up sheets laid out in the grounds for the visitors, clearing litter from the streets along Chaityabhoomi and cleaning the street with water.

“The disinfection process is important because of the huge crowd,” said Dr Shailesh D. Ingole, a veterinary doctor who has a clinic at Shivaji Park.

Over 35 employees of the solid waste department, along with 315 NGO volunteers, ensured that the area was kept clean in the past four days. The maintenance department’s 80 employees collected posters and banners put up along the roads.

The residents of Shivaji Park area have often complained of the hygiene-related problems created by the huge number of Dalits who visit the city every year on December 6.

“The roads, footpaths and the Shivaji Park grounds have been cleaned and restored to normalcy. The hard work of our staffers has been appreciated by mayor Sunil Prabhu and municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte,” a civic official said.

“As many people visit one spot it leads to a lot of mess in the locality. It is a good thing that the BMC started cleaning immediately,” said Prafulla Shetty, a resident of Shivaji Park.
