An 18-year-old student of city's HR College has been invited to drive a Formula BMW in New Delhi. Only six drivers from India have received this invitation to form one team for the JK Racing Asia Series.
Formula BMW, also known as the JK Racing Asia Series, is a world class event and features racing drivers from around the globe.
Mohit Ahuja, a first year of Bachelor of Mass Media student, has a passion for speed. He started his racing career when he was just 9 years old. However, considering difficulties in the field of racing, Mohit has already prepared a back-up plan. "If I am not driving, I still want to be around. I am planning to go for sports management with sports science course from a UK University," said Mohit.
"Racing is a very difficult career. It is very expensive as well. But thankfully, until today I have been able to practice it. HR College has been really supportive for racing."
Mohit's mother Priyanka Ahuja is the driving force. "We come from a middle class family. Motor sports being the rare ones' choice in our country, it was not very easy for us to accept when our son showed interest in it. But soon we realised that he has a thing that it takes to be in motor sports and we decided to support him. Now, he has proved us right by making us proud."
Priyanka, like any other middle class woman, was unaware about this glamourised sport. "Mohit was just nine when his friend's father started a track for go-carting in Kolkata, where we ware based then. Following his love for several sports, Mohit enthusiastically started going to the track with his friend. It is only after some visits, he decided that he wants to practice it professionally. Fortunately it was then when racing as a sport started establishing in India with JK Tyres conducting national level racing championships," she said.
"He participated in Micromax racing. He came out with flying colours in most of the races and managed to hold good ranks that brought him on to the second position in national championship," she said. Mohit has been participating in many racing championships since 2003-04 and has also won many of it.
“Lately, it had been very difficult to participate in racing due to lack of availability of tracks and also lack of sponsorship. Now, this JK Racing Asia Series is again a new beginning. We are fortunate to have received the required sponsorship for the race,” said Priyanka.
