SANPADA: Sanpada residents on Sunday woke up to find Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS), police and traffic officials, mediapersons scanning the entire node. Into the wet morning, the entire focus was directed at two flats in Gunina Building developed by Sai Developers where allegedly the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the threat emails on the Ahmedabad serial blasts were traced to.

ATS and police officials were on the topmost floor of Gunina building allegedly questioning Keith Heywood, the 50-year-old American national and tenant of flats 1503 and 1504, whose email was suspected to have been hacked by terrorists to send emails.

Owner of another flat in the building empathised with the Heywood family and felt that the US nationals were being victimised. She said that she had met the couple in the elevator of the building and he introduced himself to her. “When I met him he had said that he was in city on deputation from his Bangalore-based software company. The entire family - he, his wife and two kids — came across as simple and it is quite possible that they are victims. The IP address of a computer is known to the local cable provider and service provider so it is not difficult to hack an email id,” she said.

The building was under tight security by the building security personnel, apart from police officials who ensured that none of the media persons entered the building. The only set of people who were given permission to enter the area was tea vendors, delivery boys of different eatery outlets and maidservants. Deputy commissioner of police RD Shinde said, “It is not correct for us to comment anything about this matter.”

One of the officials said the flats were owned by Abhishek Sharma, son of Nalin Sharma, the deveoper of the building in sector 16 of the node, and that the house has been on rent since last six months. The officials swooped down on the house at 12:30am on Sunday and it went on till late Sunday evening.

Resident of a neighbouring building, Olive Shallot said the area had quite a few foreigners. “There are quite a few South African and American nationals living in the vicnity but I doubt if their identity is scrutinised while they are given a house on rent,” he said. Navi Mumbai is not new to being an epicentre of terror elsewhere, so to speak.

Another residential sector in the satellite town - Ghansoli — had come into media focus after ATS arrested a 7/11 suspect, Mumtaj Ahmed Chaudhary, in 2006. The three-day combing operation by cops in Navi Mumbai had resulted in the netting of Maulana Mumtaj Ahmed Chaudhary, also in the 7/11 case.
