People have questioned the citizen groups over contesting the BMC elections separately and have urged them to come together to continue the citizens’ movement.

In a programme on ‘Citizens’ movement and its future’ organised by the Lok Satta Party (LSP), they discussed the civic poll results. All other citizens’ groups such as Mumbai Nagrik Manch, Mumbai 227 and Mumbai Nagriksatta and citizens were invited.

All citizen groups said a lot needs to be done to ensure that the movement sustains. “Campaigning is not enough to win elections and more ground work is needed,” said Hina Shroff of Mumbai Nagrik Manch (MNM).

Dr Jayaprakash Narayan, national president of LSP, urged citizen groups and activists to continue their efforts for a better governance. “To sustain our movement, we need to do work together,” said Narayan, also a member of Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly.

Many citizens raised questions about contesting the polls separately by all citizens’ groups. “Despite having a similar goal, why did citizen groups fight the polls separately? This created confusion among citizens,” said Abhijit Thakur, who attended the meeting.

Though all groups agreed to come together, they avoided talking directly about coming together in future. “We tried to reach out to all citizen groups and supported the MNM’s candidates on receiving response but others did not respond,” said Mustan Tambawala, general secretary of Lok Satta Party.
