Child missing? Search online before approaching cops

Though the facility of a website to register lost and found children has existed for over a decade, not many are aware of its usage and benefit.

Have you or someone you know been waiting to find a child gone missing? Did you know you could possibly go online before you went to the police station to find the child?

Though the facility of a website to register lost and found children has existed for over a decade, not many are aware of its usage and benefit. This is why Shelter Don Bosco is gearing up once again to educate the public about the benefits of www.homelink.in and www.missingchildsearch.net.

“This is a technological intervention for the young at risk (YaR) through Homelink software and missing child search (MCS) website to help the public and NGOs to search for missing complaints. It inter-connects the nationwide data and anyone can go on this site to check the details of missing children or to register their child’s details so that he or she can be located,” said Don Bosco’s Sonal Macwan, coordinator of the Mumbai hub for the software. 

There are 89 centres across the country that have bought the software to upload details of street children as well as missing children with all the acquired information including the children’s pictures.

“Many times, children found on the streets have been there for so long that they do not remember their original address and contact details of their family. Though we rehabilitate them, there is no substitute for one’s own home. Sometimes we have seen children reunite with their families after four to five years and with the same hope we want to spread this message nationwide that people can take help of the website and check if one of the pictures is a face they know,” said Gayatre, a coordinator at the shelter. 

The shelter has also requested all the police stations across the city to forward them all the missing complaints and their complainants to the centre or the other six organisations active in the Mumbai hub of the software so that they can counsel them on the website use or help them register their complaints. 

“No matter after how many years, our endeavour will always be to reunite children with their family. And this is why we want the technology to be aptly used,” said Datta K Gade, volunteer at the centre.
