After almost three weeks of investigation and interrogation of the arrested accused, the Mumbai crime branch is certain that slain senior journalist J Dey’s trip to the United Kingdom (UK) and Europe has no connection with his assassination.

After Dey was shot dead on June 11, there was intense speculation about Dey’s pleasure trip. There were reports that Dey had reportedly gone to meet some cronies of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim which angered Chhota Rajan, eventually leading him to order Dey’s killing.

However, the Mumbai crime branch has now revealed that Rajan had called up Rohi Tangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalya in the first week of April. At the time, Kalya was in his village situated near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

According to sources, during his interrogation, Kalya said that Rajan called him up and asked him to proceed to Mumbai for an assignment. “With this, it is clear that Rajan had planned the killing before the first week of April,” a police officer said on the condition of anonymity.

It was only in the second week of April that Dey planned his UK and Europe trip, got his visa done and booked his tickets, the police said. “This clearly indicates that when Rajan planned the killing, Dey had not even planned to travel to the UK,” the officer said. Dey had travelled to the UK and Europe between April 27 and May 5, on a package tour through Raj Travels. “So far, we haven’t found anything suspicious in the trip,” the officer added.
In fact, when Kalya came to Mumbai in the first week of April, Rajan promptly arranged to give him Rs2 lakh.

“Based on the statement given by Kalya, when he reached Mumbai in the first week of April, Rajan asked him to go to the Diamond Gardens area in Chembur. Kalya was instructed to stand at a predetermined place, where an unknown individual came and handed him a packet which contained two lakh rupees,” the officer said.
