Mumbai: The recent spate of crimes against senior citizens have led police to urge people to check on their elderly neighbours at least once a day. Notices have been put up in many housing societies in the north Mumbai. Mohalla committee meetings too are spreading the message.
The cops have asked managing committees of housing societies to provide lists of senior citizens living in their buildings. "Often senior citizens are not in a position to approach or call the police for registering their names. So, we have requested committees managing the societies to provide us with the data," said Sanjay Banerjee, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 11.
Banerjee said that the practice of talking to neighbours at least once a day would be helpful in curbing crimes against senior citizens. "If neighbours of an elderly couple checks on them everyday, it will give them a sense of security. The constant watch will also keep the wrong doers at bay. We have told housing society members to call the police immediately if they don't get to see an elderly neighbour for more than a day," he said.
The housing societies have been told to register the domestic help working for senior citizens with the police. Also, records should be kept of people visiting the senior citizens, added Banerjee.
