At least 20 to 25 residents of Chinchwad who had taken loans from Shriram Finance Company found themselves at the receiving end when six staffers of the company’s Chinchwad branch, including the assistant branch manager, allegedly indulged in an Rs79.61 lakh fraud over the period of last one year.

The six company staffers are alleged to have recovered loan repayment installments from borrowers and misappropriated the money. Besides, there are at least five to six cases, wherein, they allegedly repossessed the vehicles of borrowers and disposed them of without the knowledge of the company.

The incident came to light during the audit of the company. Auditor Hujefa Ghasya filed a case of cheating and misappropriation against the six company staffers at Chinchwad police station on Friday. No arrests have been made so far.

In his complaint, Hujefa has named company’s assistant branch manager Chetan Gosavi and executives Yogesh Nikam, Rajendra Patil, Sandip Sonawane, Santosh Kasabe and Ganesh Patil.
Senior officials of the company, who spoke to DNA on the condition of anonymity, said the fraud was going on at the company’s Chinchwad branch office at Gheewala Complex in Chinchwad since February last year.

The company officials said Chetan and his executives recovered loan installments from the borrowers in Chinchwad area but did not deposit the money with the company account. Hence, although the borrowers had paid the installments, the bank records showed them as defaulters.

Moreover, the company officials added, Chetan and his team forged some repossession letters and repossessed vehicles of at least half a dozen borrowers. Repossession of these vehicles was also not shown in company’s records and instead the vehicles were disposed of.

The company officials claimed that the fraud did not come to light immediately because the company was lenient towards the borrowers. “Our borrowers belong to middle class and normally, they pay up honestly. Hence, we do not repossess their vehicles or send them notices as far as possible. That could be the reason as none of the affected borrowers approached us till the fraud came to light during an audit,’’ said a manager from Shriram Finance Company.
