A dental college and four medical colleges have broken away from the association of private colleges to tie up with the state-conducted Common Entrance Test (CET) and fill seats. This will give CET hopefuls an additional 450 extra seats across these five colleges.

The colleges have approached the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) to get their seats filled through the state CET. The colleges have broken their relationship with the Association of Management of Unaided Private Medical and Dental Colleges of Maharashtra (AMUPMDC) with whom they were earlier allied for the admission process.

According to sources, the colleges made this move because they feel they are not getting good students from the AMUPMDC list. “This year, we will have more seats for students who appear for the CET. But I have to clarify that students have to pay the fees according to the college’s fee structure,” said Dr Arun Vyas, officer on special duty for the state CET. “I hope this number will increase next year because more private colleges want to fill their seats through CET,” he added.

KJ Somaiya Medical College, Vidyavihar, Maharashtra Institute of Medical Education and Research (MIMER), Talegaon, MIMSR Medical College at Latur and Sinhgad Medical College, Pune, are the colleges that will now get their MBBS (Medical) seats filled from the state CET list. The Sinhagad Medical College, Pune will also be part of the state CET list for the BDS (Dental) course.

“When we follow the same examination system, why should we have a separate admission procedure? Hence this year, we decided to fill our seats through the state CET. Also, we will get good students from the CET list,” said Dr Geeta Niyogi, dean of KJ Somaiya Medical College, Vidyavihar.
