Mumbai CST station, a UNESCO-listed world heritage site, will soon get lighting that is on par with other global heritage sites to attract more tourists.

The Central Railway is spending Rs4.56 crore on the state of the art lighting, with special effects, that would make CST a prominent destination for tourists. “The architectural details highlighted at night would add to the glory of the structure,” a senior official said.

The railways have now invited proposals for the project and the tenders will open in March 2011.

The CR has also set up a museum inside the building and once the new lighting is in place, there are plans to open the building for visitors for restricted periods.

At present, the building’s front-yard has been fitted with halogen lamps focusing on the building that are switched off after 10pm.

“These were fitted about a decade ago. We have plans to procure LED and other state-of-the-art lighting.”
