Those crowded journeys are set to become a bit more bearable as suburban trains on the Central Railway are now set to get LCD TV screens for entertainment. The Western Railway had tried a similar experiment two years ago, but had discontinued them after the response from public.

A senior official said that initially the screens would be installed in 10 trains on a trial basis with one screen in each coach. The content would be selected carefully and include selective programmes that would include public awareness and railway-related messages.

Central Railway hopes to provide good infotainment to its commuters and earn significant revenue through this project. Speaking on the safety of the TV sets in trains, railway officials said that they would be encased in metal boxes and welded to the interiors so that they are theft-proof and these 10 trains would be provided adequate security.

The idea of introducing TV screens in local trains was first materialised by Western Railway in March 2007 after passengers of Shatabdi enjoyed customised entertainment system on board.Railway officials said that they would kick off the project and also expect some revenue for the railways from the project.
