For commuters unaware of rain-related disruptions to railway schedules during the monsoon, the Central Railway (CR) has introduced a special service on the helpline number 139, to provide
instant information during the coming months.
With the new option being introduced on the helpline from today, commuters can be updated on the cause of the disruption, if any,
and the estimated time it will take to restore services. The helpline service is being provided in four languages.
A control room which is manned 24x7 gets instant updates of disruptions from the railway control room, and this information is updated on the network's Interactive Voice Response service, railway officials said.
"The updation of the service is almost instantaneous and there are 330 lines which can handle queries simultaneously to provide information throughout the day," chief public relations officer (Central Railway), S Mudgerikar, said.
The service, which will be operational on a trial basis till September, will also inform commuters about predictions of heavy rain and possible disruption of services, he said. After the monsoon, rail authorities will decide if they want to continue with the service, Mudgerikar said.
Despite there being no formal announcement of the service, railway authorities said they had already received 19,000 calls since the service started today.
