Stand up and be counted. Your Census, your future. Help us plan a brighter tomorrow.

These are a few of the several messages being flashed across the online media by the office of the registrar general and census commissioner.

They have also launched an official web page, titled India Census 2011, on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter asking people to participate in the population enumeration exercise.

The second phase of the national population registry starts on Wednesday. The exercise will continue in the city till February 28.

Two online groups have been formed on Facebook alone with the tag line, Information is strength. You count, therefore we count, while the group on Twitter not only shares information on the Census but also invites suggestions and feedback from the people.

The groups have been a hit amongst people — the one on Facebook has 2,000 followers, while India Census 2011 has been trending swiftly on Twitter.

The department has also started a national toll free helpline (1800 345 0111), apart from a city centric helpline across wards which will be started by the civic body. Mumbaikars can dial 9167259701-24 and to get their queries addressed. “The helpline  will be activated from February 21,” said Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner.

The first phase of the counting exercise ended on June 31 last year, when enumerators carried out house listing. In phase-II, the forms will go beyond general information and gather additional details.

“Along with personal data, information on literacy, educational level, employment, migration and fertility will be filled up in the forms. This enables gathering of holistic information of every citizen of the country and goes beyond a mere population count,” explained Mhaiskar.

Census 2011 is the seventh Census since independence. The official web page of the census commissioner adds that Census is a initiative to build a developed India and the support of every Indian is vital. Census is also the biggest source of data to find out the actual number of people in the reserved category.
