The fate of hundreds of students from the Central Board of School Education (CBSE) who have taken the school-based exam instead of the traditional board exam, will be decided today.

The state government has finally agreed to give admission to class X CBSE students who have appeared for school-based exams. However, whether these admissions will be provisional or final on the basis of the school marks itself, will be decided only in a meeting that takes place today between the education department and school education minister Rajendra Darda.
Earlier, the state had refused to grant admission to CBSE students into state board junior colleges as they felt it was unfair to consider their marks on par with students who have given the board exam. But after weeks of a deadlock between the CBSE and state, the state finally decided that their admissions will be done on the basis of the excess seats left vacant after the online admission process is complete. It means that these students might not secure a seat into top city colleges regardless of how high they scored.

Education department says that such CBSE students cannot participate in the regular online admission process, because they changed their minds at the last minute. “The CBSE board had made it perfectly clear in all their circulars that only those students who want to continue studying in the CBSE board should opt for the school-based exams. They have known about this for a year. They have changed their minds at the last minute and so we cannot give them admissions in the online process,” saidV Radha, in-charge secretary of education.

The state has decided to allow these students to take offline admissions, but only after the online admission process is completed. However, the final decision regarding whether these admissions will be on a provisional basis or final admissions, is still pending. “We are yet to decide whether the admissions will be given on a provisional basis or not. The decision will made in a meeting at 10.30am tomorrow and the schools will be notified by 2pm,” Radha added.

She also added that the state government has not taken a tough stand against CBSE students like the ICSE board which has completely refused to give admissions to students taking the school-based test.
