Caste certification process to go online in Maharashtra

The process of issuing caste validity certificates would soon be made online, Maharashtra Social Justice Minister Shivajirao Moghe told the Legislative Council on Wednesday.

Also, action would be taken against the officials found to be seeking bribe for issuing the certificates, the minister said, replying to a debate on the issue, initiated by Diwakar Raote (Shiv Sena) and others.

The minister assured that henceforth caste validity certificates would be issued in three months from the date of application.

Water Supply minister Laxmanrao Dhoble, who was present in the house, said he had not received his own caste certificate yet. To which Moghe announced that MPs and MLAs would be able to get the certificate within two months.

As of March 31, 2012, a total of 1.27 lakh applications were pending, the minister said.

The government had also decided to constitute a district level  committee for the verification of the caste certificates, he added.
