A Bandra court on Monday sent cartoonist Aseem Trivedi to judicial custody till September 24 after the police said his custody was not required.

Trivedi, who was arrested on Saturday on sedition charges, made it clear that he would not apply for bail till the police dropped the charge against him. “I am not seeking bail because I am proud of whatever I did, and I will do it repeatedly,” he said. “I am not a criminal that I should deposit money and seek bail, but till the time the charges of sedition are not dropped against me, I will continue to be in jail.”

“He kept repeating that he is just fighting against corruption and he will not apply for bail unless he is cleared of sedition charge,” Chandrakant Bhosle, senior inspector of BKC police station, said. The maximum punishment for sedition is life imprisonment.

The Kanpur-based artist has been accused of putting up banners mocking the Constitution during Anna Hazare’s rally last year and of posting obscene matter on his website.

Scores of Trivedi’s supportes, who had gathered at the court premises, started shouting slogans when the police brought Trivedi. His arrest has sparked a national debate with opposition parties criticising the arrest. The CPI(M) termed the sedition charge “outrageous”.

But Congress’ Ambika Soni said,  “When the Constitution ensures freedom of expression, it also lays down that we as Indian citizens respect all national symbols,” she said
