The Mumbai Crime Branch has busted an inter-state vehicle theft gang after arresting three people. The police sources claimed that the accused used to steal high-end cars and sell them in various states. The police have also recovered a stolen Pajero SUV from them that belongs to an hotelier.

The arrested trio have been identified as Dilshad Ahmed Khan, Ashiq Bashir Khan, Mohammad Yasin Qureshi. According to the police, complainant Mahesh Kumthekar is an hotelier from Sindhudurg. Kumthekar had bought the said SUV 18months ago for  Rs18lakh.

“Kumthekar had stayed at his relative Ashok Bagwe’s place at SJ Road in Mahim and had parked his SUV outside the residence on May 24. The next day complainant saw that his vehicle was taken away by some unknown persons, after that he chased them in Bagwe’s car, but was unable to locate them,” said a crime branch officer.

Kumthekar then lodged a complaint at the Mahim police station, while crime branch was doing parallel probe into the case. The crime branch received information through an informant about a vehicle theft gang. A trap was set and the thieves were nabbed.
The gang has vehicle theft cases registered against them at Chembur, Pantnagar, Sion and Shivaji Nagar police stations in the city. “They even sell stolen vehicles in other states, mostly Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh,” said a crime branch officer.

Man who sold soaps for mobiles held
The Kurla police on Sunday nabbed a unique conman, who duped the people that wanted new mobiles at cheap rates. All of them were given a detergent bar instead of a phone.

The accused has been identified as Israr alias Lala Qureshi, 21, a resident of Vikhroli Park site. “The police recovered a mobile phone and detergent bar concealed in two separate covers from him,” said senior police inspector Shivaji Dhumal of the Kurla railway police station.

During interrogation, Qureshi revealed that he had duped more than 50 commuters at various railway stations in Mumbai for the past two years.

Jeweller held for Rs3.5crore fraud
The LT Marg police have arrested a jeweller for allegedly duping a Kalbadevi-based jeweller to the tune of Rs3.50 crore worth ornaments. The culprit allegedly gained trust of the victim through genuine deals and later defaulted on payments. He later locked shutters of his shop and closed down his operations.
The accused has been identified as Mohansingh Gulabsingh Rao, 45, a resident of Borivli.

According to the police, complainant Niklesh Sanghvi, 35, runs a jewellery store at Kalbadevi Road. “Rao, who was earlier working with a jewellery store in Zaveri Bazaar, came in touch with Sanghvi, as the latter knew Rao’s former boss. In October last year, Rao visited Sanghvi’s office and told him that he has started his own jewellery business and wants to trade with him,” said a police officer from LT Marg police station.He had taken ornaments worth Rs3.50 crore from Sanghvi on credit basis and had promised to make the payments in seven days time but he just disappeared and shut his shop, said the police.
