The chairman of one of the most reputed NGOs Cancer Aid & Research Foundation has been arrested by the Dongri police in a decade-old forgery case. It is alleged that the arrested person had used forged documents to get posts in two different trusts.

The police on Thursday arrested Professor Abdul Adir Kazi, a former dean of the Arts faculty of Mumbai university, and his associate Riyazuddin Kazi.

According to assistant commissioner of police (Dongri division) Ravi Thakur, Kamar Samruddin Kazi, 77, a resident of Gunpowder Road in Mazgaon, had lodged a complaint against the duo. Abdul and Riyazuddin were produced before the court on Friday and remanded in police custody till June 20.

Thakur said that in 1953, two trusts known as Anjuman-e-Tarakki and Tanzeem were established in Aachra village of Sindhudurg. Kamar has been chief secretary of both trusts, the office of which is situated at Isaaq Manzil building at SVP Road in South Mumbai.

“It is alleged that in a meeting that was held between the trust members on February 14, 1999, wrong information and documents were furnished, resulting in a change in the holders of posts of both these trusts. It is also alleged the charity commissioner at Worli was given the change report and other documents, stating that a no-confidence vote was passed against Kamar and his supporters. All these documents were found to be fake,” said Thakur.

He added that based on these documents Abdul and his associates had taken charge of the posts of Kamar and his supporters. “When Kamar learnt about this forgery, he moved a local court in 2000. Based on the court’s direction, the Dongri police registered a case,” said Thakur, adding that the police are on the lookout for 11 more people involved in the case.

“The duo has been arrested on charges of cheating and forgery. We are probing the case from all angles and are getting the documents and records that were submitted at the charity commissioner’s office. We are also probing the roles of the other 11 who are yet to be arrested,” concluded Thakur.

The CARF, established in 2001, has branches in California and Konkan as well as collection offices at Thane, Mahim, Navi Mumbai and South Mumbai. It is a known and famous NGO that aims to provide help and treatment to cancer patients and gets donations from other countries and NRIs.
