After three years of wait, a memorial for the heroes in the 26/11 terrorist attacks will be installed at Cama and Albless Hospital for Women and Children.

On November 26, 2008, two security guards on duty — Baban Ughde and Bhau Narkar — were gunned down by a terrorist in the hospital premises. Both were from a poor socio-economic background.

Following the tragedy, the hospital provided employment to the sons of the slain security guards. The hospital authorities have already identified a location in the hospital premises where a 26/11 heroes memorial will be constructed.

The memorial has been a long-pending demand of the doctors and other employees at Cama hospital. An engineer from the state government’s public works department is likely to work on this project. The authorities want to complete the project in a speedy manner and with proper finishing touches.

“We wish to install a memorial in memory of the two security guards who lost their lives while putting up a brave fight with the terrorists. Most of the groundwork has already done. We have already sent the design to the engineers. We are hoping that before that the memorial is erected before the 26/11 anniversary later this month,” said Dr Rajshri Katke, superintendent of Cama hospital, who took over three months ago.

She admitted that the entire project has been delayed quite a bit. “I agree this is a bit late, but I can’t say more on this issue. To beef up security, several CCTV cameras have been installed across the hospital and are controlled from the superintendent’s office,” added Katke.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has given its approval for the installation of a statue of slain assistant sub-inspector Tukaram Omble at Girgaum Chowpatty. Omble of Gamdevi police station sacrificed his life during the encounter with terrorist Kasab and Abu Ismail under the Chowpatty bridge on 26/11.
