Soon, black-and-yellow taxis will have details about the identity, contact number and address of the drivers prominently displayed on a stand fixed on the dashboard, similar to the fleet taxis.
This measure is expected to bring in transparency and enable commuters register complaints against drivers who refuse fares, behave rashly and, in general, inconvenience commuters.
General secretary of the Mumbai Taximen’s Union Anthony Quadros said that in the next couple of months, his union will fix the stands on the dashboards.
The motor vehicles department had made it mandatory in April 2010 for taxi drivers to have a photo identity card.
Quadros said that the campaign by RTOs across the city between June 21 and June 25 has forced drivers to have a photo identity card issued for themselves. This is an effort to make black-and-yellow taxi services more passenger-friendly.
