A rescue operation by Plants and Animals Welfare Society (Paws), Thane, turned violent on Tuesday when two women activists were allegedly beaten up by few butchers at Bail Bazaar in Kalyan.

On August 4 evening, the volunteers of Paws learnt that two calves were being illegally slaughtered at Bail Bazaar. A team of six volunteers headed to the spot, where they found two ailing calves, one paralytic and another in absolute distress, near the municipal slaughter house. “When our volunteers protested saying that cow slaughter was banned in India, the owners threatened them with dire consequences,” said Nilesh Bhange, founder of Paws, Thane.

Bhange said that two men came forward and claimed that the calves belonged to them. When the argument started to turn ugly, three Paws volunteers, Kedar Marathe, Prasad Phadke and Saurabh Chougule, rushed to Bazaar Peth police station to lodge an FIR.

Meanwhile, the situation at the spot turned highly volatile when one of the calves was forcibly loaded on a tempo and strangled to death with a rope. When the volunteers tried to intervene, the butchers assaulted Parinita Joshi and Manasi Bhanage. “Two uniformed policemen watched the whole episode silently and didn’t intervene even when the women were being attacked,” Bhange said.

Bhange said that as more people started to gather, the so-called owners of the animals disappeared from the scene. “However, two men on a motorcycle suddenly appeared before the volunteers and threatened them,” he said, adding that they noted the registration number of the motorcycle and passed it on to the police.

Killing or maiming of animals of any value above Rs10 is banned under section 38 (J) of the Indian Penal Code. This includes bulls, oxen, horses, mules, camels, etc. “Also, abandoning a pet animal is cruelty under section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. So if the calves were owned by the two men, then how did they reach the slaughter house?” Bhange asked

“We will submit all the papers, FIR copies to the district collector, who is the head of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Committee in the Thane District, with request to take strong steps against illegal transport of animals,” he added.
