It was road rage at first and then crowd fear which allegedly prompted a 36-year-old to whip out his sport starter pistol to disperse the crowd.

He managed to do that but the police have seized his sport pistol.

When a motorcycle brushed past Shekhar Puranik’s car near Powai’s Morarji Nagar area on Wednesday night, he was furious and started arguing with the biker, Mohammed Ansari.

As the two squabbled, the locals and the pedestrians gathered and tried to pacify them. Witnesses said it was Puranik’s fault. The locals said as Puranik was aggressive, he angered the ones who trying to talk to them. The crowd then started abusing him and tempers started rising.

In a fit of rage, Puranik, a businessman, took out his sport starter pistol from his car and fired a round in the air. “The loud noise scared the crowd and everyone started running helter skelter,” said Surendra Nair, a local.

The police took Puranik and Ansari to the police station. During interrogation, it was learnt that the “weapon” was only a sport pistol and not dangerous fire arm. Puranik had a valid licence for it, police sources said. “Puranik said he got scared after seeing the people around him and so he fired to disperse the crowd,” said a police officer of Powai police station.

No case was registered against the accused. The police let off Puranik with a warning but seized his sports pistol.
