After a year of it being announced, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation’s (MSRTC) plan to cover major bus depots in state with CCTV cameras has started gathering pace, with MSRTC prioritising depots and finalising locations for the same.

As per an MSRTC official, of its 247 ST depots, major ones covering religious and industrial areas, which are possible terror targets, have been covered in the first phase. “Since the past year, there hasn’t been much movement on the project, but now things are starting to take pace,” said an MSRTC official requesting anonymity.

“Though tenders are yet to be floated, the state’s nod for the project has come through, while the budgetary process is on,” said RR Mangaonkar, additional DGP and chief vigilance officer of MSRTC.

“The angles/places where the cameras should be fitted, its focus and resolution will be finalised by the state transport’s traffic branch, which is also the user department of these CCTVs. Most cameras will be fitted at spots with huge influx of people, like urinals, inquiry and ticket counters and indoor restaurants,” said an official.

The alleged mastermind of the Pune German Bakery blast, Mirza Himayat Baig and wanted accused Ahmed Zarar alias Yasin Bhatkal, had carried a three-kg RDX bomb from Udgir to Pune in state transport buses, covering a distance of 380 kilometres.
