The canteen at Mumbai CST that witnessed a cylinder blast and subsequent fire in the heritage building in December was thrown open again, though the non-functional fire hydrants and other promised measures are yet to be fulfilled. Sources said that the newly-opened canteen too is devoid of any fire safety measures.

The canteen cum co-operative stores, reportedly run by the Shiv Sena, was thrown open on Thursday. Employees at the canteen said that they would not be cooking on the spot. Fire officials had found 30 cylinders stored in the godown and said that they had found the fire-hydrants of the building non-functional. The CR had then promised to form a three member committee for fire safety, but its report was kept under wraps.

The backyard of the iconic CST building is almost a dump yard with a maze of make-shift sheds, godown, debris and scrap lying. The situation has not changed after the fire. Ironically, the spot is located just between the general manager and divisional manager’s office, who are the top bosses of CR. Heritage activists questioned the CR for the permissions given for making make-shift godowns and allowing cooking in the premise of a world heritage site. CR officials said that they have not given any permission for cooking inside it.
