A part of the Valdhuni bridge between Kalyan and Vithalwadi railway station collapsed on Friday evening, leaving five people seriously injured.

The 540m bridge, which was to be inaugurated by mid-January next year had been proposed to ease out traffic congestion at the parallel Patriphul bridge, where more than 5000 vehicles ply daily.

Speaking to DNA, the local residents said that the construction was going on for the past two years and from the past one month, the labourers worked till 1am in the morning. “We were asleep when suddenly there was a loud noise. We ran to the spot and saw three men lying under the collapsed bridge,” said Satish Bonkar, a local resident.

The labourers have been identified as Asgar Sardar (23), Babu Pintya (30) and Ajay Chaudhary (32) and admitted in Shreedevi hospital and Sri Rukhmini Bai hospital respectively in Kalyan along with two passersby -Subhash Gaikwad (22) and Santosh Gode (30) .

“We were filling slabs along with 13 others when a part of the bridge collapsed and three of us went down. Fortunately, the iron rods did not pierce our bodies,” Asgar Sardar, a labourer stated. The labourers have received multiple injuries on their arms, torso, heads and legs.

Materials used on the bridge including the sand and iron bars have been sent for testing, but the KDMC officials have said that the material used was of good quality and “it was just a mechanical failure” that caused the incident. “The scaffolding must have weakened. We have appointed consultants who will determine the cause of the collapse and check other parts to prevent another such accident,” said PG Kulkarni, executive engineer, project department, KDMC.

Kulkarni said that the corporation will put in additional reinforcement to reconstruct the damaged part.

A case of accident has been filed with the MFC police station, Kalyan.
