In a recent meeting held with senior police officers, Mumbai police chief Arup Patnaik said that officers of DCP rank and above will have to work as vigilance officers and look into complaints related to builders and redevelopment projects.

Cracking the whip on the builder-police nexus, he said that emphasis should be to ensure that the poor get justice and ascertain whether builders are using the police for their own benefits, sources said.

“Minute scrutiny of cases should be done and important cases should be looked into by DCP and senior rank officers. We have to ensure that the poor and innocent get justice. There should not be any bias from the police and nobody should take unnecessary advantage using the department for their own benefits,” Patnaik told DNA.

“The commissioner said that it has come to light that builders and corporates are smartly using retired police officers employed with them to get their work done from the police department. This should be stopped with immediate effect and they should not be allowed to influence the police in their functioning in any way,” said an officer, requesting anonymity.

Referring to the builder-police nexus, he told his officers that sometimes station diaries are manipulated and entries are not done in builder-related cases. “Even senior inspectors and officers often seek posting in police stations where redevelopment and SRA projects are in progress,” Patnaik reportedly told officers.

Speaking about the cases related to the builders with the Economic Offences Wing, the commissioner said that sometimes non-bailable warrants are not served in a few cases, magistrate referred cases are delayed unnecessarily and civil cases are turned into criminal cases.
