Brawl over 'Chikni Chameli', 8 students, man held

A Dahisar-based businessman and two of his family members were allegedly assaulted by a group of 10 to 12 students on Thursday after a screening of Agneepath. The Dahisar police have arrested nine persons, including eight students, on charges of rioting.

According to the police, Sunni Vaiti, 23, and nine of his family members went to watch the film at Movie Gem cinema hall on Thursday. When the song Chikni Chameli came on, some students began dancing; the family objected, and a heated argument ensued, after which the students were thrown out by the management.

“Still enraged, one of them called up his uncle Lallu, who brought two of his associates to the scene. After the movie, as the Vaiti family was driving off, the group stopped their car and dragged Vaiti, his father and brother out. They thrashed them with bamboo sticks, and smashed the car’s window panes,” said senior PI Ansar Peerzade.

Vaiti lodged a complaint with the police, who subsequently arrested Lallu and the eight students from their residences in Dahisar. They were remanded in police custody till February 7.

Four people are still wanted in this case.
