When Uday, who works with the Shelter Don Bosco spotted nine-year-old Vivek Chauhan crying between the tracks near platform number four at Dadar railway station around 8pm on January 17, he rushed to help the child assuming he was separated from his parents.

However, it took about 19 hours for Uday and his colleagues to discover that Vivek had planned to run away from his house possibly to his grand parent’s home in Dhanbad (Jharkhand) to avoid attending tuitions.

Vivek did not reveal details of his family till afternoon on January 18 because he did not want to go back.

“On Tuesday, Vivek told us that he lived in Nalasopara. We started for Nalasopara at 3.30pm and while we were walking towards his home from the station we were spotted by his father,” said Gracy who is the senior coordinator at the Shelter Don Bosco, who monitor the railway stations in Central as well as Western line to trace any child in need of help.

“We had been so worried after we got a call from a nearby jewellery shop owner that he had found our son’s school bag lying on the street. We were clueless where he was if he did not go to the tuition,” said Vivek’s father Shailendra Chauhan who had found out a week ago that Vivek was bunking tuitions.

“I had scolded him about a week ago after I found out he was not attending tuitions,” said Vivek’s father Shailendra Chauhan.
“We have seen several cases like Vivek.

When children run away from home they don’t understand the kind of danger they may have to face. Fortunately we could help Vivek reunite with his family, not all kids we trace are that lucky,” said director of the shelter Father William Falcao.
