In yet another instance of harassment by railway staff, a Borivli housewife has accused railway ticket checkers at Borivli station of harassing school students and making them forcibly pay fines for using the platforms due to the BMC foot overbridge being closed for repairs.

The foot overbridge in Borivli has been under repair for the past 10 months. Therefore, citizens have been using the subway and platforms to go over to the other side, said Jagruti Sampat, a housewife.

Narrating the incident, Sampat, resident of Borivli (east) said, “My son (Sunny, name changed) was studying in standard 10 and he used to go Sinha Classes at Borivali (west) for his tuition classes. To go to his classes, he used the subway and then platform to go to Borivali (west). The incident took place at 4pm on Wednesday. As he came on the platform, a ticket checker (name not known) intercepted him and asked him for his ticket.

Sunny politely told the TC that he regularly used the platform to go to Borivli (west) due to the closure of the foot overbridge and also showed him his school and tuition identity cards.

The TC was rude and refused to listen to him and asked him to pay the fine for entering railway premises without ticket. Sunny immediately paid Rs250 and collected the receipt, said Sampat.

Even Sunny’s tuition mate faced same problem on Thursday evening. The boy did not have enough money to pay the TC , who took Rs50 from him before allowing him to go, said Sampat. When Sampat went to TC office to lodge a complaint, one of the TCs told her to buy a monthly pass for her son to avoid such harassment.

“People must possess a valid railway ticket before entering railway premises. If TCs are harassing people then we will take stern against the them, “ said  Sharad Chandra, chief PRO, Western Railway.
