Suspended Congress functionary Ajit Sawant, in his fresh bid of allegations, released a list of 40 rebels who are contesting against party candidates in the Mumbai civic polls.

Announcing the launch of his campaign to Save the Congress, Sawant added: “All key leaders have acted in their own interests resulting in injustice to the loyal party workers. This would help the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to grow at the cost of Congress.”

He also alleged that city Congress chief Kripashankar Singh is determined to turn the BMC into the Jharkhand Municipal Corporation for his personal gain. Without naming Singh, he reiterated that the former was working in favour of the NCP.

He also alleged that MPs Eknath Gaikwad and Sanjay Nirupam ensured that their personal interests were safeguarded in the allotment of seats.

Sawant was recently suspended from the post of Maharashtra Regional Congress Committee general secretary on disciplinary ground after he alleged that party workers with elective merits were kept away from the fray.

On the rebels’ list released by Sawant are Surekha Sakpal (ward 201), N Vithal (ward 170), Meena Deshi (ward 182), Supriya Kadam (ward 125), Vishnu Gaikwad (ward 180) and Tejindar Tiwana (ward 31).
