It's a ray of light for educationists seeking to diversify big state universities. While the topic still awaits the state government's attention, Rajya Sabha MP Bhalchandra Mungekar has expressed his willingness to bring this issue in the central government's notice. "Before the next five-year plan is getting decided, bifurcation of loaded universities in the state is an important task. I shall draw centre's attraction to this issue in Maharashtra by calling the minister of human resource department, Kapil Sibal, to the state to provide state educationists a chance to put forth their proposals," said Mungekar.

Mungekar was speaking at the 32nd annual conference on higher education: for sustainable development in the changing world, on Saturday. The two-day conference organised by Maharashtra State Federation of College Principals' Association of Non Government Colleges (MSFCPANGC), at National College Bandra aims at looking at the different aspects of higher education, the most important being the state government's ignorant attitude toward the higher education sector.

He said, "It is certainly a burden when a single university has to mentor around 700 colleges under it. This will lead to a compromise on academic standards in higher education."

"In Hyderabad there are institutes of higher education which are run by IAS officers, one for each institute. That is the level of involvement shown by the government there, this is needed for sustainable development of higher education," added Mungekar.

Several other issues proving to be obstacles in sustainable development of higher education in the state were discussed at the conference, which saw the presence of several dignitaries from the field of higher education.
