Two history professors of Jai Hind College have brought out a compilation of writings on the Constitution of India, both looking at it in retrospect as well as presenting new interpretations.

Kirti Narain, principal of the college, and vice-principal Mohini Dias thought of a book on the subject during the nationwide seminar held at the college in September last year to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. World-renowned civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr III and well known social worker and great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi will contribute to the book.

“It will provide a fresh perspective to the Constitution. We will compile and edit papers presented by Martin Luther King Jr III and Gandhi during the seminar,” said Narain, who has already authored four history books.

The book will discuss varied themes such as Dr Ambedkar’s contribution to the Constitution, Mahatma Gandhi’s impact on the Constitution, minority rights, terrorism, environmental concerns, empowerment of women, Naxalism, criminalisation of politics, educational reforms and communalism. Further, social activist and writer, Kancha Ilaiah, retired chief election commissioner of India, Naveen Chawla, and Justice Tahilramani, judge at the Mumbai High Court will offer their insights into the Constitution through their inputs.

The book also questions whether the Constitution has withstood the test of time and why it is referred to as a dynamic yet stable institution. “This book will also be a useful guide for anyone who wants to look at how much modern day India is following our founding fathers’ visions and dreams,” said Dias.

The book, ideally meant for researchers and history enthusiasts, will also be an interesting read for students of political science, law as well as social studies.
